As part of the Aseerat Project,
the Palestinian Center for Counseling (PCC) held a fun
day for the families of female prisoners. The event took place on International
Women’s Day, 8 March 2008, in Popeye’s Park in Jericho
and gathered for the first time children, mothers, fathers and siblings of
prisoners originating from the West Bank and East
Jerusalem.
Families got to know each other
and exchange stories and experiences through various arts activities organized
by PCC psychologists and volunteers. They chatted, sung and danced the
traditional dabke together in the shade of Jericho’s palm trees; children drew postcards
for their sisters and mothers in prison, watched shows and played. Above all,
the one-day event in Jericho
gave the families a platform to express their grief, a sense of belonging to a
community. The postcards made by the families reached all prisoners with the
help of the International Committee of the Red Cross.
