In an interview with Guevara Al Bodeiry, Al Jazeera reporter in Ramallah, Al Ra’ey stated that that her happiness could not and would not be complete as long as female detainees remain imprisoned by Israel under harsh conditions and repeated attacks.
She added that the detainees were steadfast and strong and that they asked her to deliver a message to all related authorities that they are still suffering, facing abuse and harsh living conditions, especially at the Al Damoun Israeli prison, and should be freed.
“There were 14 detainees in the same room, a room with one toilet and filled with bugs and insects”, Al Ra’ey said, “during my 14 years in detention, I was deprived from my visitation rights, my brother was allowed to visit me once, the rest of the visitations were with my lawyers”.
Al Ra’ey was kidnapped by the army after she shot and wounded an Israeli soldier at the Allenby Bridge in 1997. She carried out the attack to avenge the death of her brother, Ibrahim, who was killed by Israeli soldiers at a detention facility. Ibrahim was killed in the first quarter of 1988.
She joined the Popular Front for the Liberation of Palestine (PFLP) when she was 16 years old.
The Ad Dameer Prisoners Support and Human Rights Association reported that the number of female detainees in Israel prisons is now 70, including mothers and female detainees who gave birth while in prison.
Ad Dameer added that at least 10,000 Palestinian women have been arrested since 1967 and 700 of them were kidnapped during the last eight years at the beginning of the Al Aqsa Intifada.
